The afternoon sun was shining through the clouds onto this brick pillar, so I set up my things to paint only to be assailed soon after by icy rain. I persisted--remembering that Cézanne painted for two hours in a storm before collapsing and dying--for at least fifteen minutes until the water began to well on my palette. Unfortunately oil and water literally do not mix and I was forced to retire inside to put my feet up in front of a raging open fire.
Oil on canvas board, 6" x 8"
