On the last day of winter there was almost enough light to paint in the morning before work; almost, that is, but not quite enough to properly observe my daubs in the gloom. Damn the torpedoes, I said to myself, and carried on regardless.
Oil on canvas board, 4" x 6"
Daily painting exercises in tonal realism since February 2013; adorned with terrible puns since 2014.

Mandarine with Old Fashioned Glass
There once was a green mandarine,
Whose ripeness was yet to be seen.
But once season progressed,
Came an orangey zest,
Which is hardly rare but routine.

Miniature Vase with Tomato
This vase came into my possession via my aunt, but it isn't an heirloom because it's only on loan. Correspondingly, this tomato came into my possession via the fruit shop, but it isn't an heirloom either.

Onion with Earthenware Jar
Onions are brown, stoneware is brown; my poems are short and rarely profound.

Miniature Vase with Red Grapes
Yet another unremarkable painting of this miniature vase, but at least I tried raisin' the bar by attempting a bunch of grapes (whilst evidently lowering the pun bar significantly).

Pink Rose with Copper Pot
Having successfully rendered this copper pot on many occasions, I naively assumed that further success was almost copper-bottomed. But alas, this painting has conspicuously failed to come up roses, particularly the rose bit.

Apple with Blue Vase
Apples are red, vases are blue; subject, of course, to judicial review.

Plaster Cast Study
I've painted this plaster cast, and indeed each of the plaster casts possessed by the Victorian Artists Society, many many times (they are particularly good preparation for life-model work); it is almost no exaggeration to call it a cast of thousands.

Carrot in Cider Glass
It seems I'm stuck for a pun concerning this carrot--no wonder they call it carrot and stick.

Lyttleton Street from Old Castlemaine Gaol
For the final day of the Victorian Artists Society paint-out we visited the pen and broke out the paints.

Lyons Street, Newstead, Victoria
I turned up late to the Victorian Artists Society paint-out day and all the best painting spots were taken. As a result, I had to stand far away from the group by myself--I was effectively an exile on main street.

Cairn Curran Reservoir, Welshmans Reef, Victoria
My cousin kindly gave me this canvas board so that I could attempt to paint a more panoramic view. It's a different kind of board to the one I'm used to employing outside, so you might say I was testing the water.

Onion with Mustard Jar
It seems I accidentally returned to the subject painted on the 19th of June. It must be the onion and mustard repeating on me.

Only had time for a very small painting before the day drew (or painted in this case) to a clove.

Silver-Plated Egg Cup with Egg
This egg cup is one of a pair I recently bought from a second-hand shop, and if it looks almost too small to hold an egg, it's because of what is evidently a Lilliputian Big-Endian conspiracy: only the small end fits comfortably, thus necessitating that the would-be eater tackle the egg from the big end.

Lemon with Glass Vase
Lemons* are lemon, vases transparent; in the case of this fruit, the colour's inherent.

* Yes, this is actually a lemon and not a yellow grapefruit (as painted on 18th July)
