Gateway at La Madelène, Malaucène, France

Oil painting of a gateway in a stone wall with a wooden lintel.
This gateway forms part of a restored twelfth-century priory (the marvellous la Madelène in Provence) and was painted during a workshop run by well-known daily painter Julian Merrow-Smith.  Julian's sage advice and skillful demonstrations were, not unlike this scene, a gateway to new ideas and approaches.

Windows at La Madelène, Malaucène, France

Oil painting of afternoon sun shining on the side of a stone building with recessed windows and a tiled roof.
The steadily moving afternoon sun necessitated relatively swift execution--you might say that in order to paint this scene I was afforded only a small window of opportunity.
